Project Spotlight: Year-Round Outdoor Living Transformation in Northern VA

Written by Josh Desilets | Jun. 21, 2024

Take in the gentle curves, gently falling water, and a refuge from the evening cool or summer sun. This picturesque backyard project is so much more than a summer retreat. Take the guided tour of this year-round sanctuary where our clients now unwind, entertain, and enjoy the beauty of every season. This project spotlight showcases how even the most ambitious outdoor living dreams can come true, with the right professionals, of course.

How the Client Found Deckscapes

This remarkable outdoor project began with a simple referral. The client discovered Deckscapes of Virginia while we were busy transforming other backyards within their neighborhood. Impressed by the quality and creativity we displayed in these nearby projects, the client was eager to see how we could reimagine their own outdoor space.

Design Style and Features

Freeform Pool and Spa

At the heart of this stunning outdoor project is a freeform pool with a spa, designed with an organic shape that meanders just like a natural body of water. This freeform pool design is perfect for those who appreciate a more natural, relaxed aesthetic in their outdoor spaces.

Water Feature

A striking pool waterfall feature adds to the pool’s allure. This 5-foot waterfall cascades gracefully into the deep end, providing a mesmerizing focal point and the soothing sound of running water.

Expansive Patio

The paver patio around the pool provides ample space for lounging, dining, and entertaining, ensuring that there’s plenty of room for all sorts of activities. The use of Unilock pavers offers a visually appealing and long-lasting surface that can withstand the wear and tear of frequent use.

Pavilion

The pavilion, with its gable roof, serves as a versatile covered space that enhances the usability of the outdoor area. This pavilion with an outdoor kitchen and fireplace includes a vaulted ceiling, a natural stone fireplace, a ceiling fan, and a mounted television, creating a cozy yet functional space for year-round enjoyment. The stone veneer outdoor fireplace is a standout feature, offering warmth and a beautiful focal point for gatherings all year.

Outdoor Kitchen

The outdoor kitchen pavilion is equipped with everything needed for alfresco dining and entertaining. It features a built-in grill, an outdoor kitchen with bar seating, and durable countertops, making it ideal for hosting cookouts and preparing meals.

Comprehensive Landscaping and Lighting

The project also includes thoughtful landscaping and strategic lighting. Boulders around the pool add a naturalistic touch, and natural stone pool coping and porcelain pool tiles provide a high-quality, durable finish that complements the overall design.

Materials Used

Unilock Paver Patio

We constructed the foundation of the outdoor living area with Unilock pavers. These pavers are renowned for their durability and aesthetic appeal, providing a robust surface that can handle heavy foot traffic and the outdoor elements. The variety of colors and textures available in Unilock pavers allowed us to create a cohesive look that seamlessly integrates with the other elements of the backyard.

Natural Veneer on Fireplace, Outdoor Kitchen, and Spa

We used rich natural veneer on the fireplace, outdoor kitchen, and spa. This material adds a touch of natural beauty and blends harmoniously with the surrounding landscape.

Natural Stone Coping and Porcelain Tile on Pool/Spa

We installed natural stone pool coping and sleek porcelain pool tiles around the pool and spa. The natural stone coping provides a smooth, durable edge that is comfortable underfoot and resistant to the wear and tear of pool use.

Client Priorities

  1. Freeform Pool with Water Feature: The client wanted a large, organically shaped pool that would serve as a visually striking centerpiece. The addition of a waterfall was a key priority to enhance the aesthetic appeal and provide a calming sound element.
  2. Expansive Patio: It was crucial to create ample space for lounging, dining, and entertaining. The patio needed to comfortably accommodate all kinds of activities and gatherings.
  3. Covered Space: The pavilion was essential for providing shade and protection from the elements, ensuring that the outdoor area could be enjoyed year-round.
  4. Outdoor Kitchen and Fireplace: The kitchen needed to be fully functional with a built-in grill and bar seating, while the fireplace was intended to offer a cozy gathering spot.

Challenges and Solutions

Excavation Challenges

Given the property’s location, we anticipated difficulties with rock during the pool excavation. To address this, we used specialized equipment to efficiently remove the rock and minimize delays. This preparation allowed us to stay on schedule and within budget.

Coordination of Multiple Trades

Managing the various trades involved in the project—carpenters, masons, electricians, plumbers, painters, landscape crews, and roofers—required meticulous scheduling and coordination. Our project management team ensured that all trades worked seamlessly together, maintaining high standards of quality and meeting project deadlines.
